Corradino Astengo (1939-2022)
It is with great sadness that the Medea-Chart team observes the passing of beloved scholar and collaborator Corradino Astengo (1939-2022). In his decades-long career, Corradino made numerous precious contributions to the academic community. His research and publications on the Italian portolan chart makers, culminating in the chapter “The Renaissance Chart Tradition in the Mediterranean”, of the third volume of the History of Cartography (2007), will long endure as a monument to his intellectual achievements. As an International Advisor to the Medea-Chart Project, Corradino was a frequent and valued participant in wide-ranging discussions, a contributor to the Chart of the Week outreach initiative, and an invited speaker at the 2021 International Workshop on the Origin and Evolution of the Nautical Chart. In this role, Corradino's insights and expertise were treasured by all the Medea-Chart team. His generosity of spirit, and willingness to share his knowledge with the next generation of researchers, will not be forgotten. The academic community grieves the loss of a great friend. We express our heartfelt condolences to Corradino’s family.
